Driverless truck enables fully automated transportation of goods

At a large dairy, a fully automated truck (KAMAG TruckWiesel) transports packaging material and finished products on Euro and industrial pallets weighing up to 1,000 kg from the logistics center to the production building. For the return journey, pallets with fresh finished products are loaded into the truck and driven to the logistics center. A refrigerated high-bay warehouse is available there for the dairy products. Shuttle traffic between the various buildings on the company premises has thus been automated.

Hydrostatic drive and safety features

The basis for the driverless truck is a KAMAG TruckWiesel, whose requirement profile is designed for terminals and logistics yards and which has a hydrostatic drive. An electric motor acting on the axle of the existing steering wheel is used to steer the vehicle. This means that the automatic steering movements can be seen and tracked by turning the steering wheel.

In addition to safety devices such as safety edges and emergency stop buttons, laser scanners monitor the surroundings of the driverless truck and thus ensure a particularly high level of protection for people, vehicles and goods.

Articulated rear axle and conveyor technology

The two rear axles of the semi-trailer can be steered automatically independently of the tractor unit, which increases the flexibility and accuracy of the track guidance. Track guidance is carried out using GÖTTING transponders that are embedded in the road surface – a process that has proven itself many times over.

After docking, the doors of the trailer and the loading ramp open automatically and a dock leveller in the form of two support chain conveyors is lowered. The pallets are then automatically loaded and unloaded using a continuous conveyor system installed on the loading area.

Standard vehicle and manual operation

By using a standard commercial vehicle, it is possible to switch between automatic and manual operation of the truck at any time to increase flexibility. Another advantage over a special vehicle is the range of services for servicing and maintenance.

Advantages at a glance

  • Easy change between automatic and manual operation
  • Automatic loading and unloading
  • Robust & proven transponder track guidance
  • Deployment at depot with manual trucks
  • Hydrostatic drive
  • Articulated rear axles
